Understanding the economic life and demographic profile of tribal communities
Economic life consists of the mode of earning income, pattern of income generation and also the pattern of spending and savings. Collection of NWFP (Non-Wood Forest Products) is the major source of employment and income for tribes. They are not cultivators of forest products - only tribes can collect natural products from the thick forests, making collection an important source through which they can earn income for spending.
Comprehensive range of activities supporting tribal community development
NWFP are products of biological origin other than wood that may be gathered from the wild, mainly forests, other wooded lands, produced as (semi-) domesticated plants in plantations or in agroforestry schemes, or trees outside forests or produced in intermediate production systems of varying degrees of domestication.
Non-wood forest products have attracted considerable global interest due to their contribution to household economies, food security, national economies, and environmental objectives such as biodiversity conservation. The Food and Agricultural Organization established the Wood and Non-Wood Products Utilization Branch (FOPW) in 1991, making NWFP development one of FAO's priority areas.
Around 145 products can be collected from Kerala forests, mostly for medicine & food products. Some 80 percent of the developing world's population use NWFP for health and nutritional needs.
Comprehensive business approach covering domestic, national, and international markets
There are various factors for the transformation of a natural object to a marketable item. The manpower or technology used to convert an object to marketable item determines marketability - the readily saleable quality of a product. Tribal products undergo different stages of processing before reaching customers, where the role of tribal people and marketing strategies are extremely significant.
We can carry forward the business of NWFP in India very successfully. Around 800 products blessed by nature are available in India, out of which around 140 products are available from Kerala. Today NWFP has great commercial potential not only in India but also in all countries of the world.
